7 Types of Paper Folds for Leaflets and Flyers

Why would you need to use different folds for your leaflet?

When you have more to say than can fit onto a single page flyer, a folded leaflet is the perfect multi-page format to give your customers more information. The folds give your leaflet different sides, or pages, which can help to break up the information or explain different details clearly to your customers. It is commonly a cheaper option than a stapled or bound booklet.

Did you know there are at least 7 ways to fold an A4 piece of paper?

From half folds to give you 4 sides to Closed Gate Folds that give you 8 sides. Let’s have a look at the most common folded leaflet options and the ways in which you can use them.

Half Fold

The simplest way of creating more pages from a single piece of paper, folded in half either landscape or portrait, it gives you 4 sides to put your content.

A front, back and two inside pages this style of folding is perfect for any type of card or invitation.

Roll Fold (or Tri-Fold)

This type of fold is where each page folds in on itself. It gives you 6 sides to print your details on. An A4 sheet is folded into three sections, the right-hand page is folded inwards and then folded in again. This is commonly used for price lists and takeaway menus.

Z Fold

This type of fold is where you fold the paper twice in opposite directions and this is a different way of folding that gives you 6 sides to print your information on.

Gate Fold

With this type of fold, the 2 outer sides of the page fold into the centre and look similar to open wardrobe doors. The centre section is larger and unlike some of the other folding options gives you a whole A4 side that can be laid flat to get across your information.

Concertina Fold

With an A4 sheet, this will give you 8 sides to print your information on. Each side is narrow at just 74.25mm wide. This is a great option for larger size documents as well as can keep adding folds into your document.

Closed Gate Fold (or Double Gate Fold)

Similar to the original gatefold the outside quarters fold in and this style of leaflet then takes this further by then folding again in half. A great way of giving people information in stages and opening up to the full A4 page of information in the middle.

Broadsheet fold (Or Cross Fold)

Slightly different to the other leaflets above, this style of folding gives you a small square leaflet by folding the sheet in half and then half again. Historically used for large broadsheet newspapers and maps. This folding option gives you 8 square sides of content and is great as a different idea for folding your leaflet.
